One of the first and most often asked questions we get once someone has decided to purchase a puppy from us is, should I get a boy or a girl? We don't want to be presumptuous and tell you which you should get because that is a personal decision, however, we'd like to give you as much information as possible so you can make an informed decision when adding a new member to your family.

The truth of the matter is that we can make generalizations about the tendencies of males and females but each dog has its own unique personality, just like every other person and animal on the planet. So, they key is to let me know what kind of temperament you are looking for and I can try to match you to the right puppy. Some puppies are more independent while others need more people time, some puppies love to romp and play while others prefer to be quiet and snuggle. What I can tell you is some of the more general characteristics that occur between the males and females when they are not spayed or neutered.

 

First of all let us debunk some myths about females. Many people think that if they buy a female she won't have problems with "marking" her territory or belongings or that she won't do the infamous "humping" routine to everything in sight. We hate to be the ones to tell you but the truth of the matter is that the females are in charge of the pack, they are concerned with the pecking order and will seek to establish dominance. Females may actually, "mark" and "hump," especially when they have not been spayed or properly potty and obedience trained.  Another thing to think about with females is that they are more inclined to fight with one another than the males, due to the fact that they are attempting to establish the dominance hierarchy, they will even "hump" one another as a sign of dominance. There is a reason that the word "Bitch" has evolved into a pejorative word in our modern times.

 

As for the males, when left intact, they will begin to mark everything in sight between about 6 and 8 months of age. They will also may try to hump everything and anything when left intact or neutered too late. However, if your  boy is neutered early, at least before 6 months of age, and you are patient and consistent with potty training you should have no trouble whatsoever, with marking issues. Also, when neutered early the males will most likely never get into the humping routine. It is important to discourage this behavior just like you will with the jumping up on you to get attention, etc. To be honest, none of our intact males even have problems with the humping anything but females who are in heat.

 

Hmmm, have we been of much help yet? Well, now for the good news about males and females:

Females are great no matter how you look at it, they are still cute and cuddly, adorable and sweet. However, generally speaking females are more dominant and males more submissive, however, that is only a general rule. Males will tend to be more cuddly and seek you out more, that is not to say that females can't or won't be cuddly or sweet. It is just to say that the males will have a greater tendency towards this. Males will generally be less "bossy" and if you have more than one dog it is usually easier to add a male to the pack than a female.

Having said all of this, whichever you choose, male or female, remember that you are buying a Luxe Yorkshire Terrier and thus you will find that your puppy, regardless of its gender will be are smart, quick and fun-loving so you will need to have consistent potty training and set a good foundation for obedience training and learning how to behave in your family.
